Welcome to COSEE Ocean Learning Communities!
The Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE) initiated with support from the National Science Foundation build relationships between the formal and informal education and the ocean research communities.
COSEE Ocean Learning Communities (COSEE-OLC) has assembled a team of oceans sciences and science of learning researchers with experts in informal education, evaluation, social sciences, and on-line community development. The center is currently a partnership funded by NSF between the University of Washington College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences and College of Education and the Seattle Aquarium. COSEE-OCL is a thematic center with the long-term goal of developing models of Ocean Learning Communities in the Northwest region and spreading these models to the COSEE network.
COSEE-OLC brings cutting-edge research about the ocean out of the laboratory and into communities that can put that knowledge to work. The center links ocean science researchers with educators, the maritime industry, community groups and local governments to form Ocean Learning Communities through which current research about the ocean is shared and citizens become better stewards of our marine and aquatic environment.COSEE Ocean Learning Communities Goals:
- Bring together many communities (cultural, industrial, scientific, and educational) to learn together about the oceans.
- Help these communities learn to communicate clearly, equitably and strongly between themselves and their own communities.
- Encourage innovation and creativity as learning communities build partnerships with us and among themselves.
- Empower the learning communities to find ways to identify their ocean-related problems and solutions and bring them to their own communities.
- Seek and build strong models of non-traditional ocean learning partnerships that can be shared throughout the nation.
